The Materia Madura Mortar + Pestle was designed to grind spices. The base of the mortar is composed of our sustainable material, while the top part of the mortar is made out of local mahogany wood. It is meant to be removable in order to facilitate cleaning the mortar after use. River stones that have been slowly eroded over time are carefully selected as ergonomic pestles for the mortar.

To clean the wood mortar top, you can gently wash with water and mild dish washing soap. Dry thoroughly before attaching it to the base.
To clean the base of the mortar you can gently wipe or pat the surface with a dry microfiber cloth. Do not use water, soap or detergent.
Like any wood product, over time it may naturally age a little in color. You can always spruce it back up to its original rich color by applying a small portion of food safe mineral oil or coconut oil with a microfiber cloth.
Whenever possible, you should store our products in dry, cool, interior spaces.
Due to the magic behind Materia Madura, no one design is exactly alike! You can expect to see slight variations in color, texture, and size due to the organic nature of the material and its production process.
